- SharePoint will be updated with a “cohesive design language” and an “updated information architecture”
- Microsoft also promises to lay new groundwork for AI with April 2026 update
- M365 sharing is also being reviewed
Microsoft has confirmed that a new SharePoint experience is coming soon, giving users a first look at some of the most-needed overhauls to the business-focused cloud storage platform.
In a roadmap entry, the company described the update as “designed to be simple and intuitive,” adding that it is intended to address three main areas: “discovering insights, publishing content, and creating solutions.”
An “updated information architecture and cohesive design language” are two of the changes Microsoft has promised as it looks to apply the same changes it has made to other SharePoint tools.
SharePoint ready to be redesigned and of course some AI
“This update lays the foundation for AI-assisted authoring across the product,” the roadmap entry adds.
Generative AI tools across the software suite through Copilot integrations are already available to customers, but SharePoint could expand the reach of AI by making the platform smarter, too.
SharePoint can be a complicated experience for many users as it shares similarities and features with OneDrive. Aligning it with the rest of the platform is one of the ways Microsoft could have changed things; It could also have distanced SharePoint from OneDrive to more clearly define the two systems.
Currently in its development phase, Microsoft anticipates that previews of the updated SharePoint will be available in just a couple of weeks, with general availability planned for April 2026.
However, SharePoint doesn’t get any special treatment because the more consumer-focused M365 platform is also getting some useful updates.
A third-generation sharing experience promises to make sharing simpler and smarter. “At the center of this update is the new master link, a single, powerful link that controls access to your files,” the roadmap entry reads. This will also begin to be implemented from April.
