After Claude’s developer Anthropic abandoned a deal with the US War Department over security concerns, OpenAI decided to sign a deal with the military, and ChatGPT users are not happy about it.
As Windows Central reported, an increasing number of people are canceling their ChatGPT subscriptions and switching to other AI chatbots, including Claude. A quick browse through social media or Reddit is enough to see that there is a growing reaction to the measure.
Meanwhile, technology investor Aidan Gold took to X to point out that OpenAI had supported Anthropic’s security posture just before signing a deal with the DoW. The US government has also announced its intention to remove Claude from all of its departments.

The ethics of AI have long been murky: most of today’s popular chatbots have been trained on mountains of stolen and copyrighted work, bring with them the threat of causing mass layoffs, and consume huge amounts of energy.
However, earlier this week, Anthropic drew a line at allowing its AI technology to be used for “mass surveillance” and “fully autonomous weapons.” Anthropic wanted safeguards implemented in these areas and the War Department was not willing to accept them.
Enter OpenAI: The company says its deal with the US military “has more guardrails” than the one Anthropic rejected, including around mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons, with “red lines” that OpenAI plans to enforce in the future.
However, ChatGPT users are not convinced, especially when it comes to the “all legal purposes” language used in the agreement. This is a debate that will go on and on, but in the meantime, Claude has reached the top spot in Apple’s App Store.
