But in recent weeks, he seems to have become something of a relationship expert.

Newton appeared on the “Talk Les Show” with Courtside Les. The two spoke at length about marriage and relationships on the podcast and Les asked the former star quarterback some hypotheticals about having a long-term partner. He asked Newton if he would like to marry between one and five women if it were socially acceptable.

He replied: “No.”

“It’s just emotions. I want to be close to whoever wants to be close to me. So whether it’s five, six or one… I like volunteers. I don’t like hostages,” she said, clarifying that she didn’t think marriage was a hostage situation. “I don’t think it’s anything. I like volunteers, not hostages. I want people around me who want to be around me and I want them around me.”

Newton said he was fine with never getting married as long as he found his life partner.

He said he didn’t need to have a government document that said, officially, that he was married to the person he wanted to be with for the rest of his life.

But Les pushed him a little. He asked if Newton would give a ring to the woman he wanted to be even if they weren’t married and even if it was his “favorite finger.”

“What I just said, it calls everything into question: why?… Well, if that was your favorite finger when I met you, then you didn’t have anything on your finger when I met you. It looked good then, it still looks good now,” he said.

Newton suggested that he wouldn’t want their relationship to become a “gifting contest” and that if what she wanted was a shiny ring and the price didn’t matter, he would take her to a gumball machine.

“Are we living life together or is this a competition? You’re basically saying that if I don’t give you a ring, you won’t love me as much,” he said. “You can have a ring without love and love without a ring.

“I want you to listen and play this because this is what most women sound like: ‘I just want a ring, I just want a ring, I just want a ring.’ Well, why? ‘For marriage, for marriage… Find where the ring was in the Bible. … They’re not going to force me to give a gift because that’s what it sounds like. It sounds like you’re trying to corner a cat.'”

Newton’s latest comments came after she appeared on a separate podcast talking about the “value” of women as they have more children.
