Grimes reprises Kayce Dutton in Marshals, which premiered March 1 on CBS. But the debut was a gut punch: Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), died after a cancer diagnosis.

Grimes admits he was “heartbroken.”
“I felt like, ‘I don’t even know what it would be like to do it without her, what it would feel like.’ Kelsey has become one of my best friends,” she said. Television Insider.
“She’s the best actress I’ve ever worked with. She’s down to earth, sweet, and kind to all the other actors and crew.”
Before accepting the plot, he made a call.
“I worked up the courage to call. I didn’t know how she was going to feel about it,” Grimes said. “I had to see how he was doing.”
The conversation? Better than I feared.
“In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood it. She’s going to do great.”
Creator Spencer Hudnut said the loss was necessary after Kayce and Monica’s peaceful end. “We had to change his life, get him off the ranch and put him in a new position,” she explained, adding that the story also highlights higher rates of cancer on the reservations.
As painful as it may be, Grimes promises that the risk is worth it: “the idea that was presented to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really grabbed me.”
