- Managers play a crucial role in how effectively organizations implement AI
- HR teams must support managers and help unlock AI-related business impacts
- Companies should also guide workers on what to do with the time they save by using AI.
Gartner has revealed new research claiming that most workers are reluctant to fully embrace AI, with around half (46%) of managers experimenting with artificial intelligence compared to just a quarter (26%) of regular employees.
The research points out that AI is not the magic bullet that will revolutionize productivity in the workplace, and that workers are not suddenly changing the way they work after employing AI aids.
And that’s if they use AI tools: 86% of managers say they face some type of challenge when it comes to encouraging teams to use technology.
It seems that workers are not rushing to adopt AI
It seems that many workers lack a lot of direction when it comes to using AI, and many organizations expect employees to figure out how to use it themselves. The Gartner report encourages managers to guide teams on how AI actually fits into their real-world processes.
Additionally, only 7% of companies surveyed provide guidance to workers on how they should use the time they save by using AI.
Gartner also links employee pushback to layoffs: As many companies reduce their workforces in response to the rising costs and efficiency of AI, workers may fear that a mass deployment of AI could threaten their jobs.
“Until now, HR has largely focused on empowering employees to explore, learn, and innovate with AI and has overlooked the manager’s role in driving effective use of AI tools,” wrote senior director Carmen von Rohr.
Looking ahead, the report urges HR departments to focus on supporting managers, who are seen as key drivers of AI adoption, with the right training, guidance and tools.
“Once employees save significant blocks of time by using AI, that saved time will need to be effectively redistributed,” von Rohr added, noting that HR should also help managers identify how to capitalize on the productivity benefits of AI to drive greater business impact.
