- Google has published “a CLI for all Google Workspace”
- There is even a set of instructions specific to OpenClaw.
- “Not an officially supported Google product…” for now
Google has released a command line interface (CLI) for GitHub that effectively allows AI agents to more easily connect with Google Workspace apps like Gmail, Google Drive, and Docs/Sheets/Slides.
The change clearly recognizes the rise of AI personal assistants, such as OpenClaw, that can act autonomously on behalf of the user.
Google even included a specific set of instructions for integrating with OpenClaw, which has been gaining traction on social media in recent weeks.
Google opens Workspace to OpenClaw and other AI agents
The company describes the release as “a CLI for all of Google Workspace, built for humans and AI agents.”
“Drive, Gmail, Calendar, and all Workspace APIs,” Google added, promising “over 40 agent skills included.”
Because the tool also supports MCP integrations (an open standard established by Anthropic, creator of Claude), it means that other applications like Claude Desktop can also access Workspace data and information.
Although AI integrations were previously available through multiple APIs, the CLI definitely streamlines the process as we begin to see a shift in the way humans and AI agents interact with applications and data.
However, there is a big problem. Google says this is “not an officially supported Google product,” so it should be used at the risk of the person who decides to do so. Still, the willingness to open up agent AI access to its own apps is a big step for Google, signaling its willingness to cooperate with third-party systems rather than keeping users tightly locked into its own ecosystem.
As for OpenClaw, it will “live in a foundation as an open source project” and will also receive support from OpenAI following OpenAI’s acquisition of OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger.
