MIRANSHAH:

One person was martyred while 19 others, including two security personnel, sustained injuries in a drive-by suicide attack near Chashma Sarband check post on Bannu-Miranshah main road in North Waziristan district, officials said on Friday.

Police said a suspicious vehicle loaded with explosives approached the checkpoint and exploded in a powerful explosion. The sound of the explosion was heard over a wide area, spreading fear and panic among the surrounding residents.

Sources said the attack took place very close to the check post in Miranshah at night. Next to the checkpoint there is also a football field, where a large number of young people and local residents had gathered.

Due to the presence of people on the ground at the time of the explosion, most of the injured were civilians. Following the blast, the Bannu-Miranshah highway was closed to all traffic, police and medics said.

Miranshah District Central Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Asif Iqbal said the injured included children, elderly people and young men. He added that four of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving treatment in hospital.

Police sources said two security personnel were also among the injured. Dr Iqbal said that after the incident, an emergency was declared at the hospital and all doctors, nursing staff and other medical staff were present on duty.
