Deadly tornado outbreak leaves 2 dead and trails of destruction in Illinois, Indiana

A powerful storm system spawned a series of suspected tornadoes in Illinois and Indiana on Tuesday, March 10.

The severe weather conditions left at least two dead and a large amount of damage.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating reports of at least four tornadoes that hit the region.

The Lake Village, Indiana region has been hardest hit, where an elderly couple was killed when a tornado hit their home in the 8000 block of 600W.

Authorities confirmed that several people suffered serious injuries, although the number is less than 10.

The tornado left an approximately 3.5-mile-long trail of destruction through the city, trapping people inside damaged homes, downing trees and power lines, and leaving livestock loose.

Rescuers carried out a network search, including four firefighters who found their homes severely damaged.

In Illinois, the city of Kankakee was the hardest hit. Mayor Christopher Curtis reported that seven people were injured.

The most damaged area was along Sandbar Road in Aroma Park, where a two-story barn was leveled and a concrete silo was destroyed.

A large hailstorm was also recorded in the region. According to the NWS, hail with a diameter of about six inches fell in Kankakee, potentially setting a new state record.
