This comes from supply chain sources who spoke to MyDrivers (via Wccftech), and their prediction is that all four models will have vapor chamber heatsinks. It’s something we’ve seen on numerous Android phones, including the Samsung Galaxy S24.
We’ve seen some complaints about overheating with the iPhone 16, although the issue doesn’t appear to be as widespread as it was with the iPhone 15, and some users are seeing the issue persist for several months.
This is reflected in the MyDrivers report, which says that heat management has been improved on the iPhone 16, but adds that there are still lingering issues, particularly with the A18 Pro chipset installed inside the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
What is a vapor chamber anyway?
You can think of vapor chambers as next-level cooling for smartphones (and other devices). They contain small amounts of liquid that evaporates when heated, before cooling and condensing to release heat.
The addition of liquid allows heat to be removed from overstressed components (mainly the phone’s processor) more efficiently. However, these chambers take up more space than conventional cooling systems, which may be why Apple hasn’t used one before.
If chipsets can be kept cooler, they are less likely to fail and can reach higher performance levels more frequently; The principle is the same on a phone as it is on a desktop computer. It should mean that the iPhone 17 phones can offer big improvements in speed.
