Gwyneth Paltrow has never been one to mince her words, and her feelings about the Met Gala are no different.
The actress and Goop founder, 53, opened up about her complicated history with fashion’s biggest night and made it clear exactly what kind of guest she will always be.
Writing on Goop, Paltrow shared her all-time favorite red carpet looks, including two from the annual event. But before diving into fashion, he set the stage: “I have kind of a love-hate relationship with the Met Ball.”
It’s a feeling that goes back longer than she would like to admit.
In 2013, Paltrow said USA today she would “never go again”, describing the night as “very unfun”, “seething” and “too crowded”.
Evidently he overcame it, returning in 2017 and attending again in 2019.
That 2019 appearance, in a yellow chiffon dress by ChloƩ, is one she remembers fondly. She spoke warmly about her collaboration with then-creative director Natacha Ramsay-Levi and said she loved the opportunity to work with a female designer.
That year’s theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion, which produced some of the most outrageous looks the event has ever seen, and Lady Gaga and Katy Perry leaned headlong into the spectacle.
Paltrow didn’t.
“I’ll never go to the Met Ball in a hot dog costume or whatever, you know?” he said clearly.
“I always have to be myself, first and foremost. I’m not going to go in a costume, but in a dress. There are two fields that go into the Met Ball, the costume or the evening dress. And I’m always going to be a person in evening dress.”
About the ChloĆ© dress itself, she was almost poetic, describing it as “so light, comfortable, chiffon and dreamy,” like “a lemon chiffon cake.”
