Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that the government was prepared to deal with any situation arising from the ongoing global tensions following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

The meeting was held in the wake of the recent crisis caused by disruptions in oil supplies following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, to address the situation, Prime Minister Shehbaz announced a four-day work week and a work-from-home policy as part of sweeping austerity measures.

The Prime Minister today chaired a review meeting on the implementation of austerity and relief measures, as well as the conservation and management of oil reserves in light of the emerging regional situation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz told participants that given the current global circumstances, consultations were underway on additional measures to provide relief to the public. He added that thanks to the timely decisions of the government, an adequate amount of petroleum products is currently available in the country.

He said considering the fluctuating global situation, timely decisions taken by the committee formed to maintain economic stability have ensured continuous supply of petroleum products to the public.

The prime minister said economic stability and providing relief to the public remained the government’s top priorities. He added that all measures were being taken not only to provide immediate relief but also to ensure long-term economic stability.

The prime minister directed oil distribution companies to ensure sale of petroleum products at prices determined by the government and maintain transparency in the process.

He further said that austerity and savings measures had already been implemented at the national level and that additional initiatives were being considered. He added that directives for a third-party audit were also issued to ensure implementation of all these decisions.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the existing oil reserves in the country, import of petroleum products to meet local demand and measures being taken to provide relief to the public in the current circumstances.
