Shonda Rhimes has hinted that another Bridgerton A spin-off could be in the works and already has a leading lady in mind: Violet Bridgerton.
Speaking on a recent episode of Craig Melvin glass half full podcast, the executive producer was candid about the possibility after the success of 2023 Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
“I think definitely,” he said. “That’s an area that we’re excited about and we know could be really rich and very well exploited.”
And when it came to who could anchor that story, Rhimes didn’t need long to respond.
“I’ve always said that if we did something like this, Violet would be a great person to tell the story, the mother of Bridgerton,” he said. “Yes, that is a possibility.”
It is a direction that seems timely.
The fourth season of the Netflix series gave viewers more of Violet Bridgerton, played by Ruth Gemmell, as she began to develop feelings for Lord Marcus Anderson, played by Daniel Francis, the brother of her close friend Lady Danbury.
But the romance hit a wall when Violet decided she wasn’t ready to take the next step.
The question of whether Violet’s story could sustain its own series is something that even Bridgerton which author Julia Quinn has struggled with.
Quinn published the novel Violet in bloomwhich follows Violet’s life from childhood to her marriage to Edmund and his death, but has stopped short of writing a story that takes her beyond that point.
On her website, she explained that she simply can’t imagine anyone good enough for Violet. “I just adore her,” he wrote plainly.
It remains to be seen if the show goes where the books haven’t, but with Rhimes openly excited about the prospect, Violet Bridgerton’s story may not be over yet.
