PESHAWAR:
With Eid just a few days away, the city’s bustling markets are witnessing a major rush of shoppers eager to complete their festive preparations. After shopping for new clothes, residents now turn their attention to Peshawari’s iconic chappals, a traditional staple that complements Eid attire.
The historic Jahangirpura market remains the epicenter of authentic chappal shopping in Peshawari. From morning until late at night, crowds, including children accompanying the elderly, crowd the shops. Shoppers are selecting colorful variants to match their new outfits, preferring popular styles like ‘panjey daar’, band high karam, single sole and double sole designs.
The increase reflects the deep cultural attachment to these handcrafted leather sandals, known for their durability and distinctive Peshawari craftsmanship.
However, inflation has caused prices to rise considerably. Sellers report that the cost of raw materials, particularly leather and other components, has increased significantly. Compared to last year, prices have increased by Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 per pair.
What used to cost 1,500 rupees now sells for about 2,000 rupees; pairs that used to cost Rs 2,000 now cost Rs 3,000, and the Rs 3,000 pairs have gone up to Rs 5,000 or more. Traders attribute the increase directly to rising material costs amid broader economic pressures.
Despite higher prices, demand remains strong, underlining chappal’s enduring popularity during Eid celebrations.
In a modern version, Peshawari chappals are increasingly available online. Dedicated websites and e-commerce platforms allow customers to browse designs, make payments and receive home deliveries across Pakistan. This change has made it easier for those living outside Peshawar to purchase authentic pairs without visiting the Jahangirpura market, with several specialized websites specifically catering to this demand. Many expats and out-of-town residents are opting for online shopping to secure their Eid essentials.
As Eid approaches, the blend of tradition, style and evolving retail options continues to define Peshawar’s festive shopping scene.
