After all, Meta isn’t shutting down its VR metaverse: it will remain active in a limited capacity for “the foreseeable future.”

  • Meta CTO says Horizon Worlds will live on in VR, for now
  • You won’t be able to create new worlds, but you will be able to enjoy existing games.
  • He says he will remain alive in virtual reality in this way for the “foreseeable future.”

It seems that reports of horizon worlds‘ death was greatly exaggerated: Meta has announced that it will not be removing the VR version from its metaverse after all.

Earlier this week, Meta announced that it would stop supporting the VR version of horizon worlds and making it a mobile-only app, sending an email to all Quest users telling them they only had until June 15 to enjoy their favorite created worlds before they were gone forever.

Now, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has said that they will keep the app active for VR users in a limited capacity after all. Responding to someone who said they were “heartbroken” by the closure, Bosworth said in an Instagram AMA: “I have some good news for you.”

“We have decided, in fact, today, that we will maintain horizon worlds working in virtual reality for existing games,” he revealed, although Bosworth added that the new games will not arrive in virtual reality and said that, for Meta, “most of our energy goes to mobile devices” because “that’s where most of the energy of consumers and creators was already.”
