Filming has begun on Netflix. assassin’s creed series, following a recent cast announcement that had me feeling optimistic about things.
In a social media post, more casting was released along with the announcement that production had begun in Rome, and that the production would primarily film at the historic Cinecittà Studios.
We’ve known for some time that the series will follow an original story, rather than adapting the events of the first game, but not everyone is happy with the decision to set it in Ancient Rome, 64 AD.

Throughout the assassin’s creed franchise, we have been transported to a series of historically rich locations. These have included Jerusalem/Acre in 1191, Florence and Rome in the years 1400-1500, and the Caribbean in the 1700s. So the setting of Ancient Rome is different than some fans might have expected.
In fact, one X fan described the setting as “really disappointing,” stating that it strays too far from what made the games iconic. As a result, there are fears that this could be a failure for Netflix, a valid concern whenever games are adapted to the screen.

Another comment suggested that Netflix will have to work hard to make sure the quality of the writing is good, rather than simply focusing on great architecture. Style over substance seems to be a concern in some circles, although it is important to get the images right. One of the main reasons I am so attracted to games is their transportive nature and how easy it is to get lost in their locations.
While not as critical as the previous one, this fan seems to be worried about relying too much on the location that the plot will be lost.

Reception to the original story and location has been mixed so far. but with western world‘s Roberto Patino and HaloIt’s David Wiener at the helm of the project, it might surprise fans in a good way.
Of course, it’s too early to tell and since filming has just begun, we’ll have to wait a bit to see how it plays out.
