Microsoft has told users that big improvements are coming to Windows 11 (improvements covering the amount of AI that appears in the software, how updates are handled, and much more) and that the operating system setup process could also get a welcome tweak.
As discovered by Windows Latest, in response to an X user’s query about the possibility of setting up Windows 11 without a Microsoft account, Microsoft executive Scott Hanselman says software engineers are now “working on it.”
Hanselman is a vice president at Microsoft and is part of the team tasked with driving his company’s year of reliability and performance updates for Windows 11. So far, Microsoft’s changes have been received positively, for the most part.

Being able to set up a Windows 11 computer without the hassle of signing into a Microsoft account is another thing that will likely prove popular with users, as you can see if you read some of the comments below Handselman’s post.
Put users first
While it is still technically possible to set up Windows 11 without a Microsoft account, the solutions are quite technical and complicated. The local account option has been phased out of the software over the years.
As we’ve written in the past, that takes away options and flexibility from the user, and there’s no doubt that some users would prefer not to link their copy of Windows 11 to a Microsoft account, or even have a Microsoft account.
That Scott Hanselman says this is also something he hates is significant. It shows that Microsoft is willing to change features to benefit end users instead of prioritizing the company’s best interests.
While there is still a lot of work to be done to restore user trust and goodwill, Microsoft is doing well so far (and it’s only March). However, so far there is no indication of when this might be implemented, and aside from Scott Hanselman’s post on X, there is no official confirmation that the change will occur.
