Paapa Essiedu, who has been cast as Professor Snape in the upcoming HBO Max movie harry potter The series has revealed that he has received racially motivated death threats since his casting was announced, including messages telling him to quit the role or be killed.
“They told me: ‘Resign or I will kill you,'” the actor said. Sunday weather from London.
“The reality is that if I look at Instagram I’ll see someone saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’ So while I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be murdered… no one should have to go through this for doing their job. A lot of people risk their lives in their job. I’m playing a magician in harry potter. And I’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect me emotionally.”
Essiedu, known for his roles in black mirror and I can destroy youwill face off against one of the wizarding world’s most iconic characters, the brooding potions master previously played by the late Alan Rickman in the original film series.
His choice sparked a backlash from a vocal section of the fanbase, but Essiedu has made it clear that it has only strengthened their resolve.
“Abuse fuels me,” he said.
“And I’m more passionate about making this character my own, because I think about how I felt when I was a kid. I imagined myself at Hogwarts on broomsticks, and the idea that a kid like me could see myself represented in that world? That’s the motivation to not be intimidated by someone who says they’d rather I die than do a job that I’ll be really proud of.”

Although he had never seen the original films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, he grew up devoted to JK Rowling’s books.
