fortnite Developer Epic Games has announced that it will lay off more than 1,000 employees.
A memo written by founder and CEO Tim Sweeney sent to staff confirmed that the developer will cut more than 1,000 jobs. “I’m sorry we’re here again,” he wrote.
He blamed a “recession in fortnite commitment” for the decision and said the company was now spending “significantly more” than it took in.

Broader economic factors, such as the recent slower growth of the gaming industry and lower acceptance of current-generation consoles, as well as stiff competition from other forms of entertainment, were also cited as causes. Interestingly, Sweeney specifically clarifies that the layoff is not “AI related” as some might fear, and said that the company wants to “have as many amazing developers” as it can.
It comes with $500 million in identified cost savings, focusing on recruiting, marketing and closing vacant positions.
This news comes a few weeks after Epic Games announced that it would increase the cost of the fortnite In-game currency V-Bucks to “help pay the bills.” The new prices go into effect on March 19, 2026 and mean that a standard $8.99 purchase awards only 800 V-Bucks instead of the previous 1,000.
“The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot,” the company noted on its blog at the time.
