Why ‘Hurm’ breaks new ground for Invincible
As I mentioned, the The latest episode of the Amazon TV Original is the first to include narrative material that is not adapted from InvincibleThe literary counterpart.
In fact, the plot, which follows the mid-credits scene in InvincibleThe season 3 finale focuses on Damien Darkblood, aka the demon detective who was banished from Earth by Global Defense Agency (GDA) head Cecil Stedman in season 1, episode 4. In the comics, this is where Darkblood’s story ends; So why did they not only bring him back, but also install him as co-director of this season’s fourth episode?
Robert Kirkman, co-creator of the graphic novels and their television adaptation, always wanted this story, in which the eponymous hero is literally dragged to hell to help Darkblood defeat the unkillable Volcanikka, to be part of InvincibleEdition of 144 issues.
Speaking to Variety last March, Kirkman said: “We always wanted to find a way to get Damian Darkblood back on the show, and then… God, do I want to spoil this? There’s a comic book story I never got around to doing.
“Every superhero story has some chapter in which they go to hell and fight the devil. It happens in DC and Marvel comics. It’s a big problem. I never dared to do something like that in Invincible. I was still stuck and it was never a good time. So it’s very possible that we’re doing something like that on the show.”
Clearly, this Darkblood-focused side story is something that’s been on Kirkman’s mind for a long time. The Reddit post above, which includes a screenshot of Kirkman responding to a fan about wanting to reintroduce Darkblood into the comics but not having the space to do so, confirms this. With ‘Hurm,’ Kirkman finally brings his vision of this hell-based story to life.
Was it worth the wait? Based on the online reactions I’ve seen so far, fans are decidedly mixed with the new material contained in the Prime Video show. In fact, the threads on r/Invincible and the ResetEra forums are filled with opinions from fans ranging from those who were pleasantly surprised by what was on offer to those who were completely disappointed.
Of course, those opinions are just a snapshot of what the show’s global audience thought about ‘Hurm.’ At the time of publication, it’s only been eight hours since Season 4, Episode 4 debuted, so I suspect the pendulum of opinion will swing more in one direction than the other in the coming hours, days, and weeks.
Where is your original voice actor, William?

If there is one thing that InvincibleThe fanbase may agree, however, it is. No like who voices William Clockwell now.
In seasons 1-3, Andrew Rannells was the actor behind Mark Grayson/Invincible and Samantha Eve Wilkins/Atom-Eve’s gay best friend. However, after William’s first appearance in the fourth episode of this season, he sounds very, very different.
The reason? Brandon Scott Jones replaced Rannells and viewers are already *ahem* expressing their displeasure at the change.
What happened to the old man? 😠https://t.co/7VlW4Ay6OdMarch 25, 2026
In fact, numerous threads on r/Invincible, including those started by No_Yogurtcloset6575, Flat_measurement2579, and ShuckU, are filled with comments from fans who agree with their fellow viewers that Jones’ performance is a step below Rannells’. The same happens on other social networks and discussion platforms, such as X/Twitter and the ResetEra forums.
Again, at press time, there’s no word from Amazon, nor from Kirkman and fellow TV adaptation co-creator Simon Racioppa, about why Rannells is no longer involved. Whatever the reason, people aren’t happy, but if Jones is now William’s permanent voice, I guess we’ll just have to get used to it.
