Irish footballer Graham Carey announced the death of his wife, Rachel Borthwick, at the age of 37.
Borthwick passed away on Sunday, March 22 in Delhi, India, due to further treatment for breast cancer.
He fought cancer for four and a half years.
He traveled to India to explore more medical options after being told there were no treatments left available in the UK.
His parents were also by his side.
In September 2021, the mother of two was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer after the discovery of a lump.
His cancer subsequently became undetectable after receiving initial treatment. However, in March 2023 a new tumor was found.
Taking to social media, Carey, who currently plays for Scottish Championship club Dunfermline Athletic, paid an emotional tribute to his wife, writing: “There are no words that can describe the pain and sadness of having to explain to my babies that their beautiful mum and best friend are not coming home. They are their whole world and always will be. It was their only motivation during these last few years dealing with this horrible disease.”
“Our babies will always remember how incredibly strong and brave you were until the end. I know you will always look down on them, protect them and guide them. They can take comfort in knowing that their mom is no longer in pain and can now rest in peace. We will always love you more than you can imagine,” she added.
In the same post, Carey mentioned that Rachel passed away peacefully at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, India.
“We want to thank everyone who has supported Rachel throughout her journey, through donations, messages, prayers and kindness. It meant more to her and to all of us than we can truly express,” she welcomed the tributes and condolences.
