Bill allows NADRA to block CNICs of suspects

ISLAMABAD:

In a move with implications for national security and identity management, the Senate Standing Committee on Interior approved a key amendment bill that empowers the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to block the national identity cards of suspected individuals for up to 60 days.

The bill, tabled by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, was passed by the committee and will now be presented in the next session of the Senate for final approval.

The proposed amendment aims to address critical operational gaps in addressing misuse of identity documents and people evading legal scrutiny.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the national identity document is a sensitive and vital document directly linked to national security.

Officials maintained that its misuse poses serious risks not only to security but also to the country’s economy. They argued that in the absence of a clear legal framework, NADRA has faced serious operational hurdles in taking timely action against suspected cases.

The ministry further stated that criminal elements often take advantage of legal loopholes to avoid action, deliberately evading procedures instead of presenting their position to authorities.

Under the proposed amendment, NADRA would be authorized to temporarily block the identity cards of such persons for up to 60 days, allowing authorities to carry out necessary legal and verification processes.
