If you’re an iPhone owner, you have the option to enable Lock Mode, a super secure setting that adds extra protection for your device and your data, and which Apple now says has never been breached.
We’re approaching four years since Lockdown Mode was released as part of iOS 16, and Apple spokesperson Sarah O’Rourke told TechCrunch that Apple believes bad actors have never breached the mode.
“We are not aware of any successful mercenary spyware attacks against an Apple device with lock mode enabled,” O’Rourke said, which will be reassuring to anyone who has turned on this additional protection.

The claim was backed up by other security analysts TechCrunch spoke to, who said they had seen evidence of Lockdown Mode blocking known spyware campaigns, but no cases of Lockdown Mode-enabled devices being compromised.
What is lock mode and how is it enabled?
The lock mode is very comprehensive, which is why it is disabled by default. For example, message attachments (other than images), wired connections to other devices, and calls from unknown numbers are blocked.
There are also restrictions on websites in Safari. Apple describes the mode as “optional extreme protection” against “the most sophisticated digital threats,” adding that “most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature.”
If you want to make your iPhone as secure as possible and are prepared to accept trade-offs, you can do so via Settings > Privacy and security > Lock mode. You can turn it on and off as you like, but each time you need to restart the phone and enter the PIN.
Lock mode is also available on iPads and Macs, although you must enable it separately on each device. For most users, it won’t be necessary, but it certainly has an impressive track record so far.
