Retro handheld maker Evercade has announced a brand new product and it looks like the PlayStation Portable successor you’ve been waiting for.
Dubbed Evercade Nexus, this portable console has been carefully designed taking into account feedback from the company’s previous releases. It’s a small device with two joysticks that at first glance looks a lot like the PlayStation Vita.
A dive into the spec sheet reveals that it has a slightly larger screen than Sony’s old handheld at 5.89 inches (and a resolution of 840×512), making it the largest screen on one of Evercade’s handhelds yet.

It is also fully compatible with Evercade’s 80+ physical cartridges and a new Banjo-Kazooie The double pack version is included in the box. Contains the first two classic games in the series, redesigned specifically for the handheld with new features such as widescreen support, improved controls, and additional unlockable content.

The Nexus also boasts some impressive features, like what the company calls its ‘EverSync’ local multiplayer mode. This allows two Nexus owners to play together, allowing both players to control a title at the same time on their respective screens. This is possible through some type of device-to-device connection, so you don’t need Wi-Fi to achieve this.
On the audio front, the handheld has support for wireless headphones and a set of forward-facing stereo speakers. There’s also USB Type-C charging and the brand claims battery life will last over five hours on each charge.
It sounds like a fantastic little package given its starting price of $199.99/£169.99, and I’m confident it will deliver, given how it’s branded, making it one of the best handheld gaming consoles on the market for retro gamers.
It will be available from October 2026 and pre-orders will begin today. In addition to the standard black model, American and British retailer Funstock has an eye-catching ’64 Edition’ variant that is limited to just 2,000 units and costs $229.99/£189.99.
