UK’s Ed Llewellyn praises Pakistan’s efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and reaffirms support for peace

He says this visit highlights the strength and depth of the relationship between the UK and Pakistan in times of global instability.

UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Political Director-General Ed Llewellyn on Wednesday praised Pakistan’s efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and reaffirmed commitment to promoting peace in the region during his visit to Islamabad.

Pakistan has become a key mediator and has stepped up efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East after US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which prompted Tehran to launch attacks on Israel and US military bases in the Gulf.

To ease tensions, Pakistan hosted a quadrilateral meeting of foreign ministers on Sunday in Islamabad, with representatives from Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The meeting caught the attention of the world and was widely appreciated for Pakistan’s efforts.

A press release issued today by the UK High Commission said Llewellyn welcomed Pakistani efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and reiterated the UK’s call for attacks on civilian infrastructure to cease.

“This visit highlights the strength and depth of the relationship between the UK and Pakistan at a time of global instability. Our partnership is based on shared interests and continued dialogue is essential as we work together to support regional stability and address joint security challenges,” he said.

He also acknowledged the impact of terrorism on the people of Pakistan and the sacrifices made by its police and security forces to combat it.
