- The Google Vids platform now includes Veo 3.1 AI video and Lyria 3 AI music models, among other updates.
- The update is designed to make AI video creation easier and more useful for everyday people.
- The investment in Vids comes as OpenAI exits Sora’s consumer-facing AI video platform.
Sora’s abrupt disappearance trick has many people wondering about the future of AI video production. However, Google is doubling down on the idea with a series of major updates to Google Vids, its browser-based AI video creation toolset. The latest batch of updates, once aimed more at businesses and enterprise services, are aimed squarely at the average AI production hobbyist.
The most notable addition is Veo 3.1, Google’s latest video generation model, now integrated directly into Vids. Anyone with a Google account can generate AI video clips at no cost, with ten generations per month included for personal users. Google presents it as a way to create animated party flyers, greeting cards, or other fun projects. Keep in mind that this is not supposed to be a way to make a cinematic masterpiece.
For most people, Veo 3.1 is less interesting as a feat of machine creativity than as a shortcut. Whether you want a cheerful clip to open a family slideshow, an image for a school project, or a quick social post for something you’re promoting on the side, the hardest part is often not having the idea. It’s making the thing look like more than an elaborate PowerPoint.

The same goes for music produced by AI. Google Vids is integrating the Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models, although they are not as available as the Veo 3.1. Only Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can use them to generate custom soundtracks ranging from 30-second clips to three-minute tracks.
Unless you have a talent for music composition or editing, adding audio is more than a small flourish. The soundtrack ruins many home videos, even if the visuals are great. A slightly sentimental family montage can survive mediocre transitions. You can’t survive a bad royalty-free ukulele track.
Vids also employs AI to create the look and sound of its “avatars.” These customizable digital characters can be ordered to behave however you want in a video while maintaining a consistent appearance and voice across scenes. You can ask the AI models to adjust their settings, clothing, and even the accessories they interact with by typing your request.
It is also possibly the deepest feature of the uncanny valley. But, if you’re okay with that, it’s also a clear example of how Google is trying to make AI media creation seem like just another software tool and not just a novelty.
Exit Sora, enter I Spy for everyone.
While OpenAI may be moving away from the idea that everyday users want a separate destination just for AI-generated video experiments. Google’s move suggests that the company believes people might want AI video features integrated into a larger platform.
Google is aggressively expanding this as well. AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra users can now generate up to 1,000 Veo videos per month, which is no coincidence secondary figure. That is, “we think this is becoming part of how people work and create now” territory.
And that’s really the larger story here. Google isn’t just adding AI details to a video app because it’s making a specific bet on what the average person really wants from these tools. It’s not a standalone playground for abstract generative experiments, but rather a set of integrated features that help turn everyday moments into finished things that can be shared with less effort.
That may also explain why this update seems more timely than it seems. If consumers’ withdrawal of Sora’s OpenAI suggests that destination AI videos were a tougher sell than expected, Google’s approach points to a more sustainable version of the category.
