Viggo Mortensen will not return to Middle Earth as Aragorn.
The actor who played the future King of Gondor in Peter Jackson’s original the lord of the rings The trilogy will not reprise the role in The Hunt for Gollum.
Director Andy Serkis revealed the news, ending weeks of speculation and generating intrigue over who will inherit one of fantasy’s most iconic mantles when the film is released on December 17, 2027.
“…we’re recasting the role and we’re on our way to finding someone,” Serkis told ScreenRant, leaving fans bracing for the emergence of a new Aragorn.
Serkis will direct and reprise his role as Gollum, promising a story that is equal parts chase and psychological descent.
“It’s a physical search for the character, but also a psychological search for himself,” he explained, previewing a journey that will test Gollum’s fractured soul and the audience’s expectations.
Peter Jackson returns as producer, alongside Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou joining from The Rohirrim War.
Kate Winslet has also been confirmed for the cast, although her role remains under wraps.
Set between the hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, The Hunt for Gollum It aims to integrate perfectly into the existing tradition.
Serkis emphasized that for some viewers, this will be their first adventure in Middle-earth, which raises the stakes of authenticity and spectacle.
