Olivia Munn has spoken movingly about her Your friends and neighbors co-star Amanda Peet’s breast cancer diagnosis, and urged fans to get checked early after Peet’s own experience showed how much timing can matter.
talking to PEOPLE While promoting the second season of her Apple TV+ series, Munn, 45, a breast cancer survivor diagnosed in 2023, said she was relieved when Peet confided in her about the past year.
“Last year he told me he had been diagnosed and I was so relieved that he found out at such an early stage,” she said.
“He found it almost at the earliest possible time. He really got the gift of finding it so early that he doesn’t have to do all the treatment and all the things that need to be done for years and years.”
He was clear about what Peet’s experience means to others.
“He’s very lucky and it’s another reminder that early detection saves lives.”
Peet, 54, publicly revealed his diagnosis for the first time in a deeply personal essay for The New Yorker on March 21, having kept it private since 2025.
The article described an almost unimaginably difficult period in her life, when she received her cancer diagnosis while her parents were simultaneously in hospice care on opposite coasts.
When his sister called to tell him that their father was about to die, Peet flew to New York but did not arrive in time.
“I didn’t make it before my father took his last breath, but I was able to see his body before he was taken from his apartment,” she wrote.
“As soon as my father’s body disappeared from sight, I was able to panic again about my cancer.”
Peet received his first clear scan in January. Days later, her mother, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, died in hospice with her daughter by her side.
In Your friends and neighborsPeet plays therapist Mel Cooper and Munn plays his friend and neighbor Sam Levitt.
