- CEO says younger workers should look to constantly adapt and learn new skills
The CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) has said that workers around the world must ensure they constantly adapt and evolve to remain relevant in the age of AI.
Speaking in the human[X] At the conference in San Francisco, Matt Garman once again highlighted the enormous effect he and his company expect AI tools to have on the world of work.
“AI is going to transform every company, every job, every way we work, every product interaction,” Garman said, “it’s going to have a massive transformation.”

‘More to come’
When asked if he thought the potential of AI technology was being overstated, Garman was in his usual euphoric mood, noting, “People ask me that all the time. I think it’s one of the funniest questions I get.”
However, when asked about return on investment and success, Garman accepted that despite heavy investment and interest, some companies will continue to fail.
“The last big bubble we had was the Internet bubble,” Garman said. “Last time I checked, the Internet is still pretty big. It’s not like it’s gone away.
“There will be billion-dollar AI startups that won’t make it. I’m 100 percent sure that’s true. This has been true in every venture capital cycle, and there will be some that will be the biggest companies ten years from now.”
Garman added that internally at Amazon, software developers report that they are about 4.5 times more efficient with AI, noting that “that’s not an efficiency that people just give up… And I think there’s more to come.”
Speaking about what’s to come, Garman said his advice to those entering the workforce today is to stay flexible and adapt to new situations.
“Maybe the best skill you can learn is learning how to learn,” he said. “Acquire new skills. Don’t assume that everything you learned now will be useful for the next 40 years.”
“When you have a technology disruption like this, you effectively take every business that exists, the trillions of dollars of SaaS products and software products, and throw it on the table, saying everyone has to go out and win this again. So that’s hugely disruptive for the incumbents. But it’s also a huge opportunity.”
