- ChatGPT still dominates AI by far, although its lead is steadily shrinking
- Gemini’s growth rate surpasses all major AI chatbot competitors
- Gemini’s rise reflects Google’s aggressive ecosystem integration strategy
Google Gemini has reportedly surpassed Perplexity to become the second largest source of AI chatbot referrals worldwide.
The latest Statcounter data from March 2026 states that while ChatGPT remains the dominant leader at 78.16%, Gemini now accounts for 8.65% of global referrals.
However, the gap between these two platforms has steadily narrowed over the past twelve months.

The Growth Trajectory and Momentum of Gemini
Gemini’s rise has been spectacular: its referral rate has almost quadrupled in less than twelve months.
ChatGPT fell from 84.21% in April 2025 to 78.16% in March 2026, and during that same period, Gemini rose from just 2.31% to its current stake of 8.65%.
The platform has seen particularly strong growth since December 2025, going from 4.74% to 7.20% in January 2026 alone.
Aodhan Cullen, CEO of Statcounter, noted that Google’s huge investment in Gemini is now paying dividends in terms of driving traffic to websites, as it is currently the fastest-growing platform among leading AI chatbots, with monthly visits increasing by more than 40% by early 2026.
ChatGPT has seen a gradual slowdown as the market matures and competitors like Gemini and Claude gain ground.
While still overwhelmingly dominant, data suggests that the AI referral market is maturing and fragmenting, as website owners and digital marketers now need to optimize for multiple AI chatbots instead of just one.
Gemini possesses a huge advantage that Statcounter’s browser-based data doesn’t fully capture.
While ChatGPT primarily functions as a destination website, Google integrates Gemini directly into Android, Google Search, and Google Workspace.
This integration reaches over 2 billion Google accounts, giving Gemini a distribution advantage that ChatGPT can’t easily match.
Even if Gemini doesn’t surpass ChatGPT in browser-based chatbot usage charts this year, it could surpass ChatGPT in total AI interactions by the end of 2026.
Predicting a specific crossover date between Gemini and ChatGPT depends entirely on the growth scenario that unfolds in the coming months.
If Gemini maintains strong month-over-month growth while ChatGPT continues to gradually lose market share, a crossover could occur in late 2026 or early 2027.
However, that aggressive scenario assumes that ChatGPT does not stabilize with its GPT-5 ecosystem and that Gemini’s growth does not slow to a more sustainable pace.
The most conservative projection puts user base parity in mid-2027, with both platforms approaching comparable user bases.
That said, the real question is whether Statcounter’s browser-centric measurement still matters, given that Gemini’s real battleground is invisible integration across Google’s expanding ecosystem rather than a standalone chatbot website.
