What is Murder in Purple and Gold about?
If you thought sports washing was a modern concept, Murder in purple and goldthe 14th entry in Lindsey Davis’s beloved. Flavia Albia series of historical detective novels, shows how leisure, as much as religion and even hand in hand with it, has long been used as an opium for the masses.
One would have thought we would stop pinning our allegiance to team colors above the athletes themselves, but that is not the case. When the body of Lepo, a young charioteer with a great future, is discovered near the Circus Maximus in Rome, the motive and the main suspect become clear to everyone. Lepus rode dressed in purple and shared a fierce rivalry with Agathon, who dressed in gold.
Flavia Albia, however, suspects that the case is not as clear as it seems. Lepo’s team had the financial backing (and scrutiny) of Emperor Domitian, an insecure dictator whose reign was characterized by violent expansionism, blatant propaganda, and censorship of all dissidents. Spoiler: it would all end in tears, none of them shed by the man himself.
But that culture has a bad habit of seeping through and poisoning everything it touches, leading Flavia Albia to turn her attention to the inner workings of Lepo’s team.
