Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday paid special tribute to the framers of the Constitution, saying that the Constitution of Pakistan adopted unanimously on April 10, 1973 laid the foundation of a parliamentary democratic system of governance in the country and established a sound institutional framework for the State of Pakistan.
He said the Constitution was a sacred contract between the people and the State, defining the legal, moral and administrative rights and responsibilities of both.
“Today we celebrate the adoption of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in a spirit of national pride,” he said in his message on the occasion of Constitution Day.
The 1973 Constitution is the guardian of the fundamental human rights of all citizens of Pakistan. This constitutional document not only details these fundamental human rights but also guarantees a legal framework for their provision, the prime minister highlighted.
The 1973 Constitution is a shining symbol of the Federation of Pakistan and national unity, he said, adding that all the federated units of Pakistan are discharging their constitutional functions effectively for national cohesion and overall economic development and prosperity, and are determined to work for a bright future.
The prime minister said this admirable unity reflects the blessings of Almighty Allah on this God-gifted country.
“We bow our heads in gratitude to Almighty Allah for the honor and dignity bestowed upon Pakistan. Pakistan, with its head held high among the nations of the world, will continue, God willing, its journey of progress and prosperity,” he said.

Senate President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said the 1973 Constitution is a symbol of Pakistan’s democratic identity, national unity and constitutional supremacy.
In his Constitution Day message on Friday, he said April 10, 1973 was a historic day when the nation unanimously adopted a Constitution that strengthened the federation, protected provincial rights and created balance among state institutions. He added that he continues to guide the political system and ensure democratic continuity. The president said that the Constitution not only strengthens the state system but also guarantees the protection of people’s basic rights.
He said that the Constitution is not only a legal document but represents the nation’s collective thinking, political wisdom and commitment to democracy. He stressed that respect for the Constitution, the rule of law and democratic values is essential for the progress and stability of the country. Gilani paid tribute to the 1973 Parliament and its leaders, especially Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, for playing a key role in building consensus on the Constitution.
He said Bhutto set aside differences and worked for national interest to create a sound constitutional framework. He said the Constitution guarantees justice for the poor, representation of women, equal rights for minorities and inclusive legislation for all sections of the society.
It also defines the powers of institutions and promotes transparency and accountability. The Senate President said Parliament remains committed to improving the legislative process to make it more efficient and people-centred. He also appreciated Pakistan’s active diplomacy, saying it has improved the country’s image globally.
He urged political parties to put national interest before differences and remain united, adding that respect for the Constitution is key to stability and progress. Gilani also called on the youth to understand the Constitution, their rights and responsibilities and play an active role in the development of the country, saying that an informed youth is vital for the future of Pakistan.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the Constitution serves as the basis of democracy, safeguards the rights of citizens and guarantees the stability of state institutions.
He said upholding the Constitution with unity and integrity is essential to the progress and prosperity of the nation.
Ayaz Sadiq expressed these views while conveying his heartfelt congratulations to the nation on the occasion of Constitution Day to be celebrated on Friday (April 10).
He highlighted the historical importance of April 10, 1973, when Pakistan adopted a Constitution by consensus.
He described this achievement as a decisive moment in the country’s democratic history, laying a solid foundation for national unity, safeguarding citizens’ rights and strengthening institutional stability.
Ayaz Sadiq stressed that respect for the Constitution, adherence to the rule of law and continuity of democratic practices remain essential for sustainable national progress.
He paid tribute to the members of the 1973 National Assembly and the political leaders of that era, who put aside differences to establish a constitutional framework that continues to guide governance and democratic institutions in Pakistan today.
Ayaz Sadiq highlighted that the Constitution is the supreme law of the country, defining the powers and responsibilities of state institutions, describing the rights of citizens and ensuring accountability at all levels.
He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to improve legislation, improve governance and promote transparency for the well-being of the people.
Highlighting the importance of national unity and strong governance in safeguarding constitutional values, he said a collective commitment to democratic principles and the Constitution strengthens Pakistan’s resilience, stability and progress.
He said the proactive diplomatic efforts of the current government have made the nation proud, promoting Pakistan’s international standing and reinforcing its sovereignty.
Underlining the importance of political cooperation, he urged all political forces to work together in the national interest, drawing inspiration from the spirit of collaboration of the 1973 Assembly.
He also emphasized the need to educate the younger generations about the Constitution and encourage them to play an active role in upholding democratic principles and contributing to national development.
Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah also congratulated the nation.
