- Claude is now available directly in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- It is designed for more specific use cases than Copilot, for now
- You can connect Claude with Word whether you’re using Windows, Mac, or the web.
Anthropic has launched a new plugin for Claude to integrate its AI assistant directly into Microsoft Word, giving users an alternative to Copilot to ask questions about documents, edit and generate content.
Currently available in beta for Team and Enterprise plans, there’s no word yet on a broader consumer rollout in the broader word processor scene.
As for the add-on, it reflects Anthropic’s broader push to integrate Claude into workplace tools like Microsoft 365, offering third-party alternatives to existing integrated systems.

Anthropic’s Claude add-in comes to Word
This particular plugin will be very useful for document-intensive workflows, such as workers in the legal, financial, and human resources sectors, where AI can summarize long contracts, suggest edits, and analyze changes between different versions.
The strategy of targeting high-value niches first, rather than targeting the mass market, puts Claude in a slightly different category than Copilot; However, the evolutions of each product will eventually cause both to compete on a more level level.
“[Claude] “reads complex multi-section documents, works through comment threads, and edits clauses while preserving their formatting, numbering, and styles,” the add-in’s description reads. It’s available to install on Windows, macOS, and the web, and links to Word rather than being platform-specific.
In a LinkedIn post, Anthropic emphasized that “edits appear as tracked changes,” making it easier to see changes and avoiding blurred boundaries.
While Microsoft 365 add-ons seem to be Anthropic’s main focus, the company doesn’t shy away from other platforms. There’s also a Claude extension for Google Sheets, while Claude himself can use sources like Google Calendar, Google Drive, and Gmail as connected data sources to provide more context to the regular chatbot.
