- Explore “what love feels like when everyone outside your family is afraid of you”
The first full trailer for the new BBC crime drama Mint has been released (which you can check out below), and I can honestly say I have no idea what’s going on.
Because there’s nothing I need more than a new fear in the back of my head that keeps me up at night! However, cast Emma Laird, Ben Coyle-Larner, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser and Lindsay Duncan seem to be taking their delicate subject matter in a whole new direction.
Article continues below.
All episodes will be on BBC iPlayer from 6am BST on Monday 20 April, with the first two airing on BBC One from 9pm that night. But what exactly are we getting into?
First trailer for BBC crime drama Mint is creepy, atmospheric and full of secrets
Look
While the trailer above doesn’t exactly reveal anything, here’s everything we know about Mint until now.
We begin with Shannon (Laird), the daughter of her area’s dominant crime family, desperately seeking romance in the shadow of her father, Dylan (Riley).
Shannon falls madly in love with Arran (Carner), a member of a rival crime family who has just arrived in town. Their love story presents an undeniable connection that changes both of their lives forever, but not everyone in their lives sees it the same way.
While Shannon and Arran navigate their forbidden romance, elsewhere things are imploding for Shannon’s family. Dylan decides to step down as head of the family for mysterious reasons.
Basically, it’s like Romeo and Juliet meets channel 4 Humansif we are guided by the aesthetics of the trailer clip. There are likely layers upon layers to Regan’s world-building, so defining Mint just as a crime drama I’m probably understating things.
I’m all for bringing some avant-garde fantasy back to mainstream television, so if you’re looking for a thriller that’s more experimental art than formulaic, I think you’ve found it.
