Opinion: Horror trailers should stop spoiling their best scares

Insidious: Beyond It has potential, but I can’t help but be frustrated by the first trailer. With three or four big scary moments happening in one short trailer, I’m now ready for them when I go see the movie in the theater. Which, honestly, really ruins the element of surprise.
Some of my favorite horror trailers from recent years have taken a more subtle approach and it really paid off. Recently, Arms Director Zach Cregger spoke to me about the film’s viral marketing and how it leaned into the mystery, without spoiling any scares.

They’ve done it before, especially when the concept was so new to us, like the red demon scare in the first one. Insidious movie, in which I remember jumping a mile.
Maybe they’re just riding it Insidious brand and know that people will go see it even if the best moments have been ruined months before.
I wish I’d gone blind, but I’m hoping some bigger, more pristine scares will catch me when I see the movie in August.
