Sergio García posted an apology on social media Tuesday for venting his anger on the second tee during the final round of the Masters.
Garcia, 46, shot into the bunker on the second hole and took his anger out on the box, smashing his driver after hitting it twice on the grass and ripping chunks out of the ground. Then he hit a table with a green cooler again.
The 2017 Masters champion said he regrets his actions.

“I want to apologize for my actions on Sunday at The Masters tournament. I respect and value everything The Masters and Augusta National Golf Club are for golf. I am sorry for the way I acted and it has no place in our game. It does not reflect the respect and appreciation I have for The Masters, the sponsors, the tournament officials and golf fans around the world,” García posted on X.
The apology comes after he came under heavy criticism for his actions, including from an ESPN star who called for him to be kicked out of the tournament for his actions.

According to club officials, Geoff Yang, president of the competitions committee, issued Garcia a warning about the code of conduct on the fourth tee. Garcia, who competes in LIV Golf, finished 8th in the tournament, finishing 52nd out of 54 players who made the cut.
Since winning the Masters, García has had great difficulty in the majors. He hasn’t finished in the top 10 in 29 majors since winning at Augusta in 2017, and has missed the cut six of eight times since his victory.

Garcia’s explosion at the Masters was not his first in a tournament, as he was disqualified at the Saudi International in 2019 for damaging the greens.
Last year, during the final round of the Open Championship, he broke his driver after crashing it into the ground on the second hole, playing 16 holes without a driver.
