Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 5 made its debut on Disney+ and there are two big talking points we need to address.
Titled ‘The Grand Design,’ the latest episode of the Marvel television show unsurprisingly examines the consequences of born again The shocking ending to episode 4 of season 2. However, in addition, it also brings two characters back from the dead, the only way said duo could realistically revive.
Article continues below.
How are Foggy Nelson and James Wesley alive in Daredevil: Born Again season 2?
Simple: They appear in flashback sequences that precede and take place around the first Daredevil television show, which aired for three seasons on Netflix and whose events are considered canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Ever since Matt Murdock’s law partner and best friend, Franklin ‘Foggy’ Nelson, was killed at the premiere of the Disney+ show, fans have speculated that Foggy would reappear in Daredevil: Born Again.
It wasn’t a crazy theory. Daredevil: Born Again has been inspired by several comic book stories, including one where Foggy is presumably killed. However, it was later revealed that he faked his own death in order to enter a witness protection program, allowing readers to breathe a sigh of relief.
I can completely understand why, then, some viewers thought a similar scenario would eventually play out in born again season 2. As it happens, Foggy comes back to life, but not in the way many expected.
In fact, as I originally joked in my Daredevil: Born Again Review of season 2, its fifth episode comprises the current story of the series and flashbacks to Matt and Foggy’s days as legal interns. In the wake of Foggy’s unexpected disappearance last season, it’s a bittersweet and moving episode that underlines the great and much-missed chemistry that Charlie Cox and Elden Henson had as their respective characters on the Netflix show.
It also closes the book on Foggy’s return in born again. In fact, this specific memory forces Matt to not only finally confront Foggy’s death at the hands of Bullseye, but also to forgive the sociopathic killer by helping a wounded Bullseye evade Wilson Fisk’s Anti-Vigilance Task Force in this episode.

Foggy isn’t the only returning face we see in ‘The Grand Design’. In a separate flashback, we finally see the lead-up to Wilson Fisk’s first meeting with Vanessa, which took place in the first season of the Netflix show.
As part of this flashback story, we are reintroduced to someone we haven’t seen since. Reckless season 1: James Wesley.
For those unfamiliar or need a refresher, James Wesley was Wilson Fisk’s right-hand man and close confidant in the Netflix series. He oversaw the day-to-day running of Fisk’s criminal empire and unceremoniously dispatched anyone who posed a risk to said illegal activities. Think of it as a cross between born againIt’s Daniel Blake and Buck Cashman, and you’ll get the idea.
Anyway, Wesley didn’t stay long because Karen Page killed him in Reckless Penultimate episode of season 1. Thanks to born again However, in Season 2 Episode 5’s walk down memory lane, the Marvel Phase 6 TV show offers another glimpse into the close bond that existed between Fisk and Wesley before the latter left his mortal coil.
Does Vanessa Fisk die in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5?

At the beginning of this article, I mentioned that there were two big talking points regarding this week’s episode, and this is the other one.
Following born again In the Season 2 premiere, Wilson Fisk actor Vincent D’Onofrio appeared to spoil Vanessa Fisk’s death on the MCU TV show. Then, when last week’s episode revealed that Vanessa had suffered what appeared to be a fatal injury, it seemed almost certain that she would die.
However, ‘The Grand Design’ seems to give him a break from being the show’s latest victim. In fact, as part of its current plot, we see one of New York’s best neurosurgeons operate to save Vanessa’s life. Considering that he will soon wake up from a coma, it seems that the operation was a success and that he will make a full recovery.
That optimism ends up being misplaced. In the final stages of episode 5, Vanessa worsens and, despite the efforts of nearby doctors and nurses to resuscitate her, dies, much to Wilson Fisk’s devastation.
With his longtime love no longer around to check his worst tendencies, all eyes will be on next week’s episode to see how the temperamental and tyrannical mayor of New York will react. Will Vanessa’s death cause him to take tougher action against the city’s vigilantes and their supporters? And what else will he do without anyone else capable of keeping him unchecked? We will know very soon.
