The victim succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at Jinnah Hospital; the attackers are still at large

A young doctor was shot dead near the Mehran Hotel on Karachi’s Dr Daud Pota Street later on Monday night in what police described as an alleged targeted attack.
The victim was identified as Dr Sarang, 36, son of Muhammad Hussain and a resident of Karachi. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered today at Artillery Maidan Police Station under sections 34 (common intention) and 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code, on the complaint of the victim’s brother Sarmad Hussain.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred around 11:55 pm on Monday. Dr Sarang’s wife, who was present at the scene, stated that the couple was traveling in a rickshaw along Dr Daud Pota Road towards Karachi University Center after the doctor returned from duty.
The complainant, quoting his sister-in-law, claimed that near the Mehran hotel a white car with an unidentified number plate intercepted his rickshaw. He added that a man got out of the back seat, pulled out a gun and opened fire on Dr. Sarang before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.
The FIR said the driver of the car remains unidentified and the wife narrowly escaped unharmed.
Dr. Sarang received gunshot wounds to the chest and three additional wounds to the legs. He was taken to Jinnah Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The author said that his nephew informed him of his brother’s death through a telephone call, after which he immediately traveled to Karachi.
Deputy Sub-Inspector of Police Zulfiqar Ali confirmed the incident and said the body had been formally examined.
He said the crime scene had been inspected and physical evidence, including spent ammunition, was detained. A sealed bag was also recovered near the incident site.
Investigators said they were investigating the case from multiple angles and efforts were underway to identify and arrest the suspects, who remain at large.
Darul Sehat Hospital, where Dr Sarang was serving as senior registrar, condemned the incident and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely passing of Dr Sarang Memon, Senior Registrar of LCMD and Darul Sehat Hospital, who was shot dead last night,” the hospital said in a statement.
He added that Dr Sarang joined the institution in July 2025 and, in a short time, earned respect for his professionalism, dedication and compassionate patient care, calling his death an immense loss to the medical community.
