New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has come under fire due to the most recent photos that were released of him and NFL reporter Dianna Russini.
Vrabel said he will step away from the team to seek counseling. However, he has landed the Patriots in a public relations disaster that began when he fervently denied that the first photo of him and Russini at an Arizona resort showed anything nefarious. He dismissed it as “a completely innocent interaction.”

Former San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman weighed in with his reaction in an interview with Pak Gazette Digital on Thursday. He said he didn’t think the dark cloud surrounding Vrabel affected the team in football terms, but that his job depended on the message the organization wanted to send.
“This is my thing when it comes down to it,” Merriman said. “First of all, he didn’t break any laws, right? This is something morally perhaps wrong. Something that he will have to deal with when it comes to that. I don’t think, in my opinion, I don’t think this is a football distraction. This will have to be, internally, that we don’t want to deal with it because it sends a message, but it won’t affect the players in the locker room and how he trains, how they are trained, how they listen to him and follow him, and how Vrabel leads.
“As far as football goes, I don’t think it does anything at all. It really depends on the message you want to send by moving forward with it. That’s what I would say.”

Page Six and TMZ released new rounds of photos of Vrabel-Russini early Thursday. This prompted a pre-draft press conference for Vrabel.
“My past actions do not meet the standard I hold myself to,” Vrabel said. “My priorities are my family and this football team, in that order. And there’s a balance there that I’m going to create.”
At the end of the press conference, Vrabel was asked to explain why he initially made a statement calling photos of him and Russini at an Arizona resort “laughable” after they were published by the New York Post in early April.
“That’s a private and personal matter. I don’t believe those comments…were an attempt to protect his family,” Vrabel said.

It was the last question Vrabel answered before storming off the podium and leaving the room.
