If you’ve ever thought that all headphones look too alike these days, here’s something you’ll love to see. An audio engineer has built headphones using yellow sponges with smiley faces on them (I’m sure Scrub Daddy is a household name) and apparently they’re surprisingly good.
Over on Reddit, a well-known sound engineer named Pud – u/pudjam667 (who often shares his creations on the platform and on Pud.com) – has revealed his latest concoction: open-back headphones with the insides housed inside Scrub Daddy sponges.
The headphones, which feature 50mm drivers and were tuned to fit the foamy material (with a few other materials used to complete the acoustic design), were put to the test and performed surprisingly well.

According to the frequency response graphs, the cans have a surprisingly flat bass response, and the curve will probably make owners of the best headphones green with envy at how flat it is. You could say that they absorb the bass.
The creator himself referred to their “divine frequency response”, comparing them to the HiFiman HE1000, and commentators have compared them to several high-end products. Even Sennheiser itself got involved and congratulated the creator for his work through his Reddit account.

Is it time to buy a pair?
Scrub Daddy headphones are a unique product. I’m sorry to tell you that you will never be able to buy them yourself.
In the comments below the post, u/pudjam667 described how they made the pair with their son, “to help teach him about trading,” and the pair went up for sale on the engineer’s website once finished.
The price was only $100, which could put them on our list of the best cheap headphones, if Scrub Daddy decided to get involved and help make these things a reality.
Pud has a wide range of headphone inventions, and the Scrub Daddy cans are probably the most regularly featured, perhaps surprisingly. Next on the list is probably the pair made from Croc shoes (well, at least a knockoff of them), which also did surprisingly well.
Both sets of headphones are certainly much more practical than Pud’s ultra-bass headphones, called Ol’ Thumpy, which make you look like a human barbell.
