ISLAMABAD:
The Supreme Court Registrar’s Office has refused to consider lawyer Imaan Mazari’s petition seeking the suspension of her sentence in a case related to anti-state posts on social media, raising objections in this regard.
The human rights lawyer had moved the high court after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) did not include her request for suspension of her 17-year sentence in the hearing.
Mazari filed the petition through renowned lawyer Faisal Siddiqi.
The petition claimed that despite his lawyer’s vehement request to stay the trial court’s sentence, the IHC only issued notices regarding the stay application on February 19 and did not stay the petitioner’s sentence.
The SC Registrar is learned to have raised four objections to the petition. He has stated that the power has not been properly granted; name, registration and mobile number of the lawyer are not available and the subject, sentence, clause and certificate are not drafted correctly.
However, the petitioner’s lawyer will soon file an application to quash the registry office’s objections. If the petition is assigned a number, a three-judge committee comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail will decide on the listing of the case.
