- Dutton Ranch Showrunner Chad Feehan exits yellow stone spin-off three weeks before the show launches
- Reports Suggest Taylor Sheridan ‘Unhappy’ and Clashes With Main Cast
- Season 2 has not been confirmed by Paramount+ as of this writing.
Just a few weeks before yellow stone split Dutton Ranch releases on Paramount+ on May 15, there’s a problem.
A TV Line report confirmed “alleged behind-the-scenes friction with series stars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, as well as ‘other key actors.'”

Puck News continued to expand on this, adding: “Feehan finished the
first season, but has been told he will not return for the second, according to three sources. (I think the feeling was mutual and Feehan probably would have left anyway.)
“I was told this wasn’t so much a purely creative issue: the scripts were good, and after some work on editing, Paramount has confidence in the show, and more about how Feehan directed the production.”
He continues: “He clashed on set with stars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly and other key actors, many of whom have been working on yellow stone for almost a decade. “Sheridan, producer David Glasser and the stars were unhappy, so Feehan is out, and Sheridan and Glasser will likely promote another writer from Season 1 to the showrunner position.”
However, it’s this last part, speculating that Sheridan will promote an existing writer to showrunner status, that interests me the most.
Opinion: Taylor Sheridan should be the only showrunner of Yellowstone spinoffs like Dutton Ranch
Look
If you have been following along with others yellow stone split marshalsyou’ll know the fans haven’t been overwhelmingly happy there either.
Following Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) as he leaves his ranch life behind to join an elite US Marshals unit, viewers were quick to complain that marshals took out a piece of yellow stoneThe CBS story turned it into a formulaic police procedural.
Although marshals has already been renewed for a second season, and I suspect Dutton Ranch it will come down too purely to the amount of fan appetite; I think the fact that both spin-offs are disappointing from the start shows that Sheridan can’t afford to stray too far.
Although he has been the showrunner of other successful series such as Lioness, landman and, more recently, the madisonhe is just an executive producer of the two yellow stone derivatives.
In previous yellow stone derivatives 1883 and 1923Sheridan was its creator, writer and producer (and in the case of 1883its director). The difference? Both shows were highly acclaimed and are regarded by fans as fondly as the main series.
doing a live yellow stone a spinoff that didn’t involve Sheridan in any immediate capacity was always going to be a risk… and that risk already seems to be backfiring on Paramount.
My advice? Arrive Dutton Ranch where he should be and confirm season 2, Sheridan should completely abandon some of his many creative projects (for example, the Obligations movie) or relax their participation in their independent programs.
