James Gunn Cautiously Reveals Two Embattled DC Comics Series Are Still ‘In Development’, But DCU’s Biggest Movie Gamble Has Been Shelved

  • James Gunn has shared an update on three DCU Chapter One projects
  • A film announced in January 2023 is no longer in active development
  • Two long-dormant programs are still being worked on

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has given fans an update on three beleaguered DC Universe (DCU) projects, and it’s bad news for one of them. Responding to a fan on Threads, Gunn confirmed that The Authoritya film that was part of the initial announcement of Gunn’s DCU Chapter One schedule in January 2023, has been cancelled.

As part of a longer response to someone theorizing that Gunn was planning to write and/or direct the film, he said: “The script wasn’t quite there, but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU, both in terms of story and practicalities. Maybe [we’ll revisit it] some day [but] “Not soon.”

Revealed alongside new solo adventures for DC icons Superman and Batman as part of the new film franchise from Gunn and co-director Peter Safran, The Authority was to be influenced by the anti-hero team comic book series of the same name that was published under DC’s sister company Wildstorm.

However, with the DCU Chapter One roster undergoing some changes since its reveal in early 2023, The Authority’s film adaptation has become the first major casualty of Gunn and Safran’s reign.

As for two other productions: Reinforcement gold and lost paradise – who have been stuck in development limbo for over three years, Gunn shared a more positive, albeit brief, update.
