Experts link home cleaning to better mental health

ISLAMABAD:

Mental health experts are increasingly highlighting the positive impact of maintaining a clean and organized home on overall psychological well-being, noting that simple household tasks can play a significant role in reducing stress and anxiety.

As awareness of mental health continues to grow, experts suggest that maintaining a clean home should be viewed not only as a household responsibility but also as an important component of self-care.

Speaking to the media, clinical psychologist Sidratul Muntaha said cluttered environments often contribute to feelings of overwhelm and mental fatigue. Disorganized spaces, he explained, can serve as constant visual reminders of unfinished tasks, making it difficult for people to focus or relax.

On the contrary, a clean and tidy home fosters a sense of control and stability, which helps relieve daily stress.

She further explained that engaging in routine cleaning activities such as sweeping, organizing, or tidying up can have therapeutic value. These tasks provide a structured and productive outlet, allowing people to divert their attention from negative thoughts while achieving small, tangible goals. This feeling of accomplishment can significantly improve mood and motivation.

Cleaning can act as a simple but effective coping mechanism, he noted, adding that it not only improves the physical environment but also contributes to a clearer and calmer state of mind.

Another clinical psychologist, Mawra, who works in a government hospital, said behavioral science research suggests that maintaining order in the environment can improve concentration, improve sleep quality and support better decision-making.
