Kylian Mbappé responded to a new wave of criticism in Spain, insisting on Tuesday that he remains fully committed to recovering from his latest injury.
The Real Madrid and France striker is sidelined with a left hamstring problem that calls into question his availability for Sunday’s classic in Barcelona, the most important match in Spanish football.
During his free time, Mbappé reportedly traveled to Italy with actress Ester Expósito last weekend, prompting criticism in the Spanish media that he may not have been taking his rehabilitation seriously.
Madrid fans also wondered why the best striker in the League was on vacation before the classic.
Mbappé denied any wrongdoing in a statement from his representatives sent to The Associated Press.
“Part of the criticism is based on an overinterpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club, without reflecting the reality of Kylian’s commitment and the work he does every day for the team,” the statement reads.
Disgruntled Real Madrid fans believe Mbappé is saving himself for the World Cup which starts in five weeks.
He also received criticism earlier this season when he was unable to play due to a knee ailment.
Madrid has little to play for in the final stretch of the season.
The club has been eliminated in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, and is practically out of competition in La Liga, as it is 11 points behind Barcelona with four games remaining.
Barcelona could win on Sunday.
Madrid has yet to say whether Mbappé will be fit and available for the classic.
Spanish media say Mbappé went to Madrid’s training center on a day off to continue his recovery.
