- Google is giving Gemini in Gmail access to your previous emails to customize tone and style
- The topic contextualization connectors will also get relevant information from Workspace.
- AI overviews in Gmail make it easier for you to find old emails faster
Google has confirmed a new update to Gmail’s “Help me type” feature, powered by Gemini, that allows AI to better adapt to the user’s personal writing style.
A new ‘Tone and Style Personalization’ feature will analyze a user’s past emails to mimic how they would normally write, while ‘Topic Contextualization’ connects the Gmail tool with other Google Workspace apps to get relevant information with less friction.
With this update, the company hopes that AI-generated drafts will feel less generic and require less editing before sending, which will ultimately reduce the amount of time it takes to send an email and free up workers to spend time on more meaningful and impactful tasks.
Gmail’s AI writer just got even better
In a blog post announcing the news, the company said the update is designed to reduce app switching and work with short prompts.
Some of the use cases cited by the company include responding to customer queries, sharing documents with colleagues, and briefing leaders.
Although the feature is primarily marketed for workplace use cases, it is not only available on all Google Workspace plans. In addition to Business Starter/Standard/Plus and Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus, AI Plus/Pro/Ultra and the AI Pro add-on for education are also rolling out to Google.
More broadly, it’s just another step in Google’s ongoing process to make Gemini a personal assistant.
Just a couple of weeks ago, the company also announced new AI overviews within the Gmail experience to make it easier for users to find information by asking questions in natural language, rather than having to filter emails by sender or date.
At the same time, those AI overviews were also expanded to Google Drive to make it easier to discover information across all content.
