OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy has found a new home at Anthropic, joining the company’s pre-training team.
The famous AI researcher, who previously worked as Tesla’s AI lead, also founded an AI education company (Eureka Labs) and has been responsible for coining the term “vibration coding,” which has become the de facto term for allowing AI to do most of the heavy lifting while “coding” an app, often based solely on prompts.
What makes Karpathy one of the most sought-after names in the business is arguably his versatility: Not only did he work at OpenAI and Tesla, but he also interned on Google’s DeepMind team while researching neural networks as part of his PhD at Stanford.

Karpathy’s move comes even as competition to hire top AI talent has increased fiercely in recent months. Meta is reportedly offering billion-dollar acquisitions to companies to secure researchers for their teams, even as researchers flock to other organizations for a variety of reasons, including ethics, access to computing, and perceived leadership.
This, as Anthropic’s Claude has made several strides in recent months, meeting and often surpassing performance metrics against rival offerings from labs like Google and OpenAI.
Its more focused offerings, such as Mythos and security-focused integrations, continue to pave the way for the company’s growing revenue and influence in the industry.
