King Charles is on a mission to save the “little red heroes”

King Charles has again backed efforts to save Britain’s endangered red squirrels.

Buckingham Palace has shared new photos of the monarch’s latest environmental commitment in Yorkshire.

The King, who has long been a passionate supporter of wildlife conservation and is a patron of The Red Squirrel Survival Trust, visited the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to learn more about the innovative scientific work aimed at protecting the UK’s only native squirrel species.

The population of red squirrels, often described by conservationists as one of Britain’s most vulnerable native mammals, has declined dramatically in recent decades due to habitat loss.

During the visit, Charles met scientists and researchers who were developing an innovative oral contraceptive program designed to humanely curb the growth of gray squirrel populations.

Experts believe the project could play an important role in helping to restore red squirrel numbers while protecting Britain’s native broadleaf forests from environmental damage linked to gray squirrels.

The King appeared deeply involved as researchers explained the science behind the initiative, with photographs from the Palace showing him studying exhibits and speaking closely with experts about the future of conservation efforts across the country.

Protecting the environment has remained one of Charles’s defining causes for decades, long before he became monarch, and his latest pledge reinforced his commitment to biodiversity and sustainable wildlife management.

Royal watchers also praised the Palace’s Instagram post celebrating the visit, with many followers applauding the King for backing scientific solutions to environmental challenges.
