New York Attorney General Letitia James joined New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport in launching an investigation into high FIFA World Cup ticket prices on Wednesday, the New York Post reports.

Officials say the high prices have led to “a series of confusion, false shortages and incredibly high prices” ahead of next month’s soccer tournament.

Both James and Davenport announced the joint investigation, which includes subpoenas sent to FIFA by the two attorneys general, to focus on the myriad problems arising from the soccer federation’s ticket sales for the tournament, including reports that fans were being misled about where their seats were located, as well as exorbitant prices.

“Being honest about ticket sales isn’t complicated. But FIFA has turned purchasing a World Cup ticket into a challenge of confusion, false shortages and incredibly high prices, all at the expense of New Jersey consumers and workers,” AG Davenport said in a statement.

The joint investigation by both states makes sense considering that several World Cup matches, including the July 19 final, will be played at nearby MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The sky-high World Cup ticket prices appear to be a bipartisan issue, as this investigation comes after President Donald Trump also made disparaging comments about the high prices earlier this month, which were routinely rumored to be over $1,000.

“I didn’t know that number,” President Trump said, “I certainly would like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay for it either, to be honest.”

The 2026 World Cup starts on June 11 between Mexico and South Africa.
