Masters of the universeThe director has offered his opinion on the current debate surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the entertainment industry.
Ahead of the release of Amazon’s new movie, Travis Knight told me exclusively that studios shouldn’t use AI to replace those who, in his words, give movies their “spirit and soul.”
However, Knight also suggested that AI could be beneficial to business as a whole if those in charge at the world’s largest entertainment companies are “thoughtful and careful” about its application.
Knight’s comments come at a pivotal time for the implementation of AI in the entertainment sector, other industries, and our society at large.
Indeed, as nascent technology becomes an increasingly prevalent element of our daily lives and governments scramble to accelerate legislation to keep the technology under control amid its continued proliferation, companies around the world are looking for ways to use it.
That includes the world’s biggest film and television producers, like Amazon MGM Studios, the entertainment giant behind He-Man’s latest big-screen adventure, and the studio that recently came under fire for announcing plans to make three new series for its Prime Video streaming platform through its newly created GenAI Creators Fund.
As many other entertainment giants, including Disney, Netflix and Warner Bros., also explore new avenues for using AI to make movies and TV shows, as well as, in their words, “improving” the user experience on the best streaming services they own, conversations about the technology will continue to dominate the news cycle for months and years to come.
Key among those discussions is whether AI will eventually replace writers, artists, animators, directors and other creatives. Knight, however, believes it would be a dark day for the industry if such a scenario ever occurred, even if he is not entirely against AI having a role in some aspects of the film sector.
“For me, it’s always about the amazing creatives who make movies,” the man behind one of this year’s new movies told me. “They are what give movies their spirit and soul.
“And that’s one of the things I like most about making movies,” he continued. “You bring together all these people from all these different disciplines, and it’s just that combination of people that could have told that story that way.
AI can be a tool or a crutch, and it’s not something we use in this film.

“Now, look, AI can be a tool, or it could be a crutch, and it’s not something we use in this movie. I try to do as many things as I can practically. It’s my experience.” [in this industry]so I want to capture as many things as possible on camera. We also used CG, a lot of simulations, and high-tech stuff to bring the film to life in the best way, and I love that combination of old school and hands-on type of filmmaking with any new technology that helps tell the story you’re telling.
“It’s a very interesting time for the industry and I don’t know where it will go,” added the director of the science fiction and fantasy film. “Overall, I don’t think this technology is something to be afraid of, I just think it’s something we need to be thoughtful and careful about.”
Masters of the universe is available now in the UK and will be released in the US and other countries on Friday 5 June. Before you watch it, find out if it’s worth watching by reading my Masters of the universe review.
