Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe elected for the period 2027-2028

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday congratulated Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe on their election as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2027-2028.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s diplomatic priorities during its current term in the Council, Dar said Pakistan, which will remain a member of the Security Council until 2026, is committed to promoting peace, security, dialogue and multilateral cooperation.
He also expressed optimism about future collaboration with the incoming members and said Pakistan looks forward to working closely with them to promote shared goals and contribute to “a more peaceful, secure and equitable world.”

The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe to members of the 15-member UN Security Council for two-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2027.
The Security Council is the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions, such as imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. It has five permanent members with veto power: Great Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
The remaining 10 members are elected and five new members join each year. This year, one comes from the Africa Group, one from the Latin America and Caribbean Group, one from the Asia-Pacific Group and two from the Western Europe and Others Group.
Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia and Liberia will remain non-permanent members of the Security Council until the end of 2027.
In June 2024, Pakistan was elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, achieving a large majority. In the election, Pakistan won 182 votes in the 193-member General Assembly, well above the required two-thirds majority of 124 votes.
